Elevating Your Louisville Homes Curb Appeal With A Custom Wood Gate
Anytime I’m working in a side garden area of a home installing a bespoke garden gate or arbor (or both!) I’m always surprised at how many people will comment on the project while they are walking or driving by. It seems people are drawn to these garden structures just as they are to any thoughtfully designed landscapes and gardens. Today I want to to share five reasons why I think this is.
Defining Transitional Spaces
When you invest in a custom wood gate you’re making a statement. Part of that statement is the mystery of what lies beyond the gate. Most of the spaces I make my gates for have gardens that are just as beautiful as the garden gates that provide passage to them.
I’m reminded of a client who after visiting Charleston, SC and being enchanted by the gates and gardens she came across on her strolls through the neighborhoods. She expressed the wonder and curiosity she experienced having seen a beautiful garden gate and wondering what beauty must reside behind such exquisitely built custom wood gates. She returned home inspired to create such a spaced in her own courtyard.
I hope when people come across one on my gates their interest is piqued in much the same manner and even for just a moment, their imagination is aroused as they envision what lies beyond those gates.
Complimenting Architectural Elements Of The Home
One of the nice things about having a custom wood gate made for your home is the ability to have it compliment the architecture of the home. There are many ways this can be achieved in the design process so that your garden gate feels like it was always meant to be in the space it resides.
Fusing Landscape Elements With Custom Wood Gate Design
This is an approach that I’m seeing more often and for good reason. The more a space blends the various design elements towards a natural theme the more harmony that space attains. With a custom wood gate this is accomplished by adding an arbor that supports vines that can bloom overhead. The sight of this should not be underrated. Just look at the gate and arbor above. Painted white with roses and clematis growing up the trellis, the combination creates a dreamy space!
Here is another example of a trellis that is installed overhead and blends with the fence that supports an existing wisteria vine. Each space is different and so are the desires of the clients. Taking these two variables into consideration goes a long way to creating spaces that embrace all of who you are.
Creating Visual Interest
Curb appeal is all about creating visual interest. Roof lines, windows, doors, landscaping, and (yes!) custom garden gates all combine to create a visually appealing scene. Some of those are easier to work with than others, but the addition of a garden gate is certainly a high impact option that is usually accomplished much easier than the other items mentioned.
One client of mine approached me about having a moon gate made for his space. He had initially come across one in years past while traveling. He swore that one day he would have one of his on and we made it happen. These impression and exposures to interesting forms in natural spaces imprint on our memories long after the initial moment has passed.
Expressions Of The Uniqueness Of Space And The People Who Dwell There
The nice thing about making custom wood gates is that word “custom”. I’ve been making frame and panel gates for several years now and no two are the same, and for good reason. No two people or spaces are the same. This keeps things interesting and allows me to make gates that represent individuals, both spaces and persons. Ultimately it is this expression of uniqueness that really adds to the curb appeal of a home.
Conclusion
A home is a reflection of so much the inhabitants hold dear. Well designed and maintained landscapes don’t happen by inattention or afterthought. They spring forth from bold vision and a desire to express to the world something of the values that are held by those dwelling there. A bespoke wood garden gate and arbor may add just the little extra you’ve been looking for to make your outdoor space exceptional. If so there is a good chance I can make one for you. Let’s chat!
